What Are The Highland Games?

The origin of today’s Highland Games originates back to the eleventh century. King Malcom III ordered men to race up a mountainside with the aim of finding the fastest runner to serve as his messenger.  There were events where men were tested in skills, strength and bravery.  Musicians and dancers also displayed their skill and talents as a credit to the clan they represented.

Highland Games have been held in America since 1836.  This will be the third year of Highland Games, in New Jersey.  Expect traditional Highland sports such as caber toss, tug o’ war and the hammer throw.  Attend the Highland Games Competition as a spectator on Saturday or try your hand on Sunday and take part in demonstrations.

What is NJRF Highland Games 2023?

NJRF Highland Games 2023 is a celebration of the heritage and culture of Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Celtic nations. A fun-filled outdoor event with sports, entertainment, music, food and drink. Celtic Festivals are held worldwide.  The festivals, known as Fèis, celebrate Celtic culture via dance, music, art, storytelling, dramas, and competitions – such as Highland Games.  Traditional music may include fiddle, bagpipe, Celtic harp, Irish and folk groups.
